In this lecture, she will offer fresh insights by previewing her latest work. Dr. Orlando is Associate Professor of French and Francophone Literatures in the Department of French and Italian at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the author of numerous articles and four books: Nomadic Voices of Exile: Feminine Identity in Francophone Literature of the Maghreb, (1999), Of Suffocated Hearts and Tortured Souls: Seeking Subjecthood Through Madness in Francophone Women’s Writing of Africa and the Caribbean (2003),Francophone Voices of the ‘New Morocco’ in Film and Print: (Re)presenting a Society in Transition(2009) and Screening Morocco: Filmic Depictions of a Changing Society (2010). The Maghreb Center is an independent, Washington DC based non-profit created to increase understanding of the Maghreb in the United States. In accomplishing its educational mission, the Center organizes Maghreb-related conferences, seminars, lectures, and roundtables and offers a series of publicly available publications. The Center sponsors numerous programs open to the public featuring U.S. and regional experts, development practitioners, foreign policy specialists, and representatives of Maghrebi governments and civil society.
